Fleet Comms in EVE Online: FC Voice Setup for Discord Corps
No game formalized the caller like EVE Online: the Fleet Commander calls the primary, and a fleet that talks over its FC dies in a doctrine-shaped cloud of wrecks. The game itself structures a fleet as up to 5 wings of 5 squads, 256 pilots at full size, but since CCP retired the built-in EVE Voice in 2018, comms live entirely in external tools. For the many corporations that run on Discord, that brings the one-channel problem: the FC's voice reaches only the channel the FC sits in. A voice relay fixes it: wings and squads keep their own channels, and the FC is heard in all of them.
How EVE fleets are structured
- Fleet hierarchy is built into the game: one Fleet Commander, up to 5 wings, each wing up to 5 squads of 10, for a maximum of 256 pilots.
- Comms discipline is codified culture: commands short, chatter off comms, "clear communications is the key to every other aspect of EVE combat" as EVE University's Fleet Command Guide puts it.
- No built-in voice since 2018: CCP retired EVE Voice citing that most pilots already used TeamSpeak, Mumble or Discord.
- Corporations scale to 12,600 members, and nullsec battles set world records (6,557 concurrent pilots at Fury at FWST-8 in 2020).
The comms problem for Discord corps
A fleet night is the main fleet, a scout wing, logistics, and often a capital group on standby. On Discord each group wants its own channel, but the FC's calls have to land everywhere at once, and Discord has no native broadcast: every account, including a bot, can occupy exactly one voice channel per server. Large nullsec blocs solve this with self-hosted Mumble servers and channel linking; corporations that live on Discord have had no equivalent.
How to set it up on Discord
dcshot is a voice relay service for Discord, built for MMO raid callouts. Setup for an EVE corporation takes minutes in the web dashboard:
- Create a channel per group (main fleet, scouts, logi, caps).
- Add the relay bots: one bot covers one channel, up to 16 per Discord server.
- Mark your FC as the caller; optionally mark an info caller per channel, so scouts report to the FC without stepping on fleet comms.
- Pilots just join their group's channel. Nothing to install, no second app.
For coalition operations, dcshot can share voice across up to four allied Discord servers, so one FC can lead corps sitting on their own alliance Discords.
When you don't need a relay
A single small gang fits in one shared channel, and that is the right tool. If your bloc already runs a managed Mumble or TeamSpeak infrastructure with channel linking, that works too. A relay starts paying off for Discord-based corps when scouts, logi and the main fleet each need their own comms and still have to hear one FC.
Facts worth knowing
Latency
Calls arrive in every channel with sub-second latency, fast enough for primary calls and align-and-warp commands.
Reliability
dcshot runs on a multi-server cluster with automatic failover. If a server fails mid-op, bots migrate to a healthy machine within seconds.
Pricing
Credit-based, no cash subscription. Run bots on op nights, drop to zero in quiet months. A month at zero costs nothing and credits never expire.
Scale
Up to 16 relay bots per Discord server, plus alliance support across up to 4 Discord servers for coalition ops.
Ready before your next op. Setup takes minutes and pilots install nothing.
